Xewali Deka, born in Assam, India, is an artist and farmer whose interdisciplinary practice engages with rural ecologies, labor, and collective memory. She holds an MFA in Painting from Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan (2020), a BFA in Painting from Guwahati University (2018), a Diploma in Fashion Design (2013), and a BA in Philosophy (2012).
Her work has been presented at India Art Fair’s Young Collectors Programme at Triveni Kala Sangam, New Delhi in 2026; Dhi Contemporary, Hyderabad in 2026; Pro Helvetia, Switzerland in 2025; Round Them Oranges, Jaipur in 2024; URVAR, Mumbai in 2024; Conflictarium, Ahmedabad in 2024; Serendipity Arts Festival, Goa in 2023; and Max Mueller Bhavan, Kolkata in 2019, among others. Deka has participated in residencies including Pro Helvetia (Switzerland, 2025), Arthshila x Khoj (2025), Gram Art Project (2024), CAMP/URVAR (2024), and Serendipity Arts Residency (2023). Her recognitions include the Inlaks Fine Art Award (2024), AFFIRMA Artist4Artist Special Mention (2025), Art for Hope – Hyundai India Foundation (2024), and the Lalit Kala Research Scholarship (2021–22).
